UNEP Poverty Indices

Poverty indices data were supplied by UNEP based on work performed by the Stockholm Environment Institute. Indices for each country were developed using different factors and therefore are not comparable across country borders. The indices were developed at district level for Lao PDR, Vietnam, and Cambodia; and at province level for Thailand. In Cambodia the ranking was based on literacy, access to electricity, access to water supply among other factors. Lao PDR and Vietnam used “consumption-based” poverty measures. Thailand is too highly aggregated to identify vulnerable communities. Refer to the SEI report for further details: Strategic Environmental Framework for the Greater Mekong Subregion. PP57 Volume 1. SEI, ADB. March 2002.
